Introduction: Social media has become an indispensable tool for communication and socialization in today's world. With millions of people using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, it has become a significant source of information, entertainment, and social interaction. However, social media has also been linked to a range of negative effects, including increased stress, anxiety, and depression. This comprehensive review aims to examine the current state of research on the impact of social media on mental health, and to identify gaps in the existing literature.
Methodology: This review was conducted through a systematic search of relevant studies published in English between January 2016 and March 2021. Studies that focused on the impact of social media on mental health were identified using a combination of electronic databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The search terms included keywords such as "social media," "mental health," "stress," "Anxiety," and "Depression." A total of 12 studies were included in the review.
Results: The review found that social media has a significant impact on mental health. Studies have shown that social media use is associated with increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Social media has also been linked to negative emotions such as anger and frustration. The use of social media has also been associated with poor sleep quality and increased levels of burnout. The review also identified gaps in the existing literature on the impact of social media on mental health. Some studies have focused on the role of social media in the development of anxiety and depression, while others have examined the impact of social media on sleep quality and mental health in general. Additionally, some studies have found that social media use can have positive effects on mental health, such as promoting social connection and reducing feelings of isolation.
Conclusion: The review found that social media use has a significant impact on mental health. Studies have shown that social media use is associated with increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. The use of social media has also been linked to negative emotions such as anger and frustration. The review identified gaps in the existing literature on the impact of social media on mental health, including the role of social media in the development of anxiety and depression, the impact of social media on sleep quality, and the impact of social media on mental health in general. Future research is needed to address these gaps in the existing literature and to better understand the impact of social media on mental health.
